Public buildings carry a huge electrical load. Daily lighting needs use a lot of electricity, and, normally, the power is there to support the need. In emergency situations, though, power can be lost, and electrical backup systems are needed to ensure that emergency lighting will be able to function and lead the building’s occupants to safety. That’s where emergency inverter systems come in. These power backup systems provide much need electricity for emergency lighting when the usual electrical systems fail.
How do Emergency Inverter Systems Work?
Standard electrical systems run on AC power. Emergency inverter systems are made up of a set of DC batteries that can convert that DC power into AC power to maintain the integrity of the lighting systems. While normal electrical systems are functional, the emergency inverter system is on standby, charging the batteries through a connection to utility power. When the power fails, the system becomes operational. The emergency inverter system begins to supply power to the building by converting the power in the battery system into power that works with the standard AC system.
Emergency inverter systems can typically provide power for approximately 90+ minutes. This is generally plenty of time for the building’s occupants to evacuate if necessary. Otherwise, power is restored, and the system begins to charge again for the next loss of power.
Why Use Emergency Inverter Systems?
Emergency inverter systems can actually supply enough power to run all or many of the electrical systems in a building. This means that use of the building doesn’t have to be interrupted due to power outage. It may not be an emergency situation. Power is often lost simply due to storms or an issue with electrical lines, and emergency inverter systems allow building occupants to continue on with whatever they’re doing when a non-emergency power outage occurs.
Other times, emergency loss is due to an emergency situation in which evacuation is necessary. When emergencies strike, emergency inverter systems allow building occupants to evacuate to safety because they run all egress lighting and illuminated exit signs which guide people out. Even though these egress lighting and exit sign systems often have their own battery backup power, having an emergency inverter system in place doubles the safety and ensures that power will be provided.
