Emergency Lighting

Public buildings are required to have emergency lighting in place for general safety.  When an emergency strikes, there is often a need for evacuation, and emergency lighting helps lead evacuees to safety.  There are several things to consider when designing a building’s emergency lighting system.  Illuminated exit signs, egress lighting, and lighting that can function in case of power outages are all essential for adequate and effective emergency lighting.

Egress Path Emergency Lighting

The egress path is the emergency exit path.  It’s the route determined by safety experts to be the quickest and safest way out of the building in times of emergency.  Building safety code regulations require that the path be well lit when an emergency hits.

Egress path lighting comes on when there is an emergency, providing plenty of light for an evacuation.  Egress path lights need to be bright, and city codes generally have a requirement as to how far the illumination must reach.  Egress lighting also needs to be able to function in the absence of electrical power.  Even backup electrical systems can fail, and many egress lighting systems are battery powered for guaranteed performance.

For those who want emergency lighting that is also stylish, there are recessed egress lighting units.  These units are hidden in the wall when not in use.  When emergency lighting is needed, they pop open, revealing the bulb and providing plenty of light for navigating the egress path.

Exit Signs for Emergency Lighting

Exit signs are also an integral part of the emergency lighting system.  Illuminated exit signs help people find their way out in the presence of an emergency, and they also help guide people through the building on a daily basis.  There are several kinds of exit signs to meet emergency lighting needs.

Non-electrical exit signs are a great addition to any emergency lighting system.  Self-luminous and photoluminescent exit signs are two kinds of non-electrical exit signs.  Self-luminous exit signs are lit through a chemical process.  Tritium gas in a tube coated with phosphor glows when the two substances interact with each other.  Photoluminescent exit signs glow in the dark, absorbing light from the ambient lighting in the building and emitting light when the power is out.

Egress lighting and exit signage that can provide illumination of exit routes when there is a loss of power are essential for any emergency lighting system.  Check with local building safety codes to learn more about proper placement for optimum safety.
